Several months ago in 2009, the British Met Office, using climate models whose forecasts are relied upon to guide global economic, social, and political realignments and dislocations, offered its 2009 – 2010 winter forecast for the UK:
Preliminary indications continue to suggest that winter temperatures are likely to be near or above average over much of Europe including the UK.
Well, the actual data are now coming in. It appears that, well, the models – collectively known as the Globular Climaprophetic Difference Engine – got it just the teensiest weensiest bit wrong:
Britain is facing one of the coldest winters in 100 years with conditions causing “widespread, persistent and severe” problems this week, forecasters have warned.
Now, to top things off, the UK is on the Teetering Point of an energy shortage:
The concerns caused natural gas prices to jump to their highest level in 10 months yesterday, touching 45p a therm.
While it is unlikely that households will find their supplies restricted, a shortage could lead to higher bills.
The National Grid, responsible for meeting the country’s energy requirements, issued a gas balancing alert (GBA) yesterday to give warning that any further falls in supply could force big users like power plants to cut their consumption.
Naturally, if power plants cut their consumption without replacement, essential services like plug-in car recharging and fluorescent bulb lighting could be severely affected. Fortunately,
[A National Grid spokesman]added: “The big generators like E. ON have gas-fired power stations and [Evil] coal-fired power stations. They can choose to switch from gas to [Evil] coal.
What the latter article did not mention was electricity backup from wind, solar, or treadle pumps powered by impoverished third world children.
Overall, I think fossil fuels won this round.
Question for the White House: Is the Oval Office thermostat still set on “Tropical”? Gotta watch that Carbon Buttprint, Mr Prez!
Ha! You’re neglecting the fact that the gale-force winds that come with the blizzards will make the wind turbines turn faster. Renewables win again!
Err, I think.
